At a recent prayer-meeting in Louisiana the following unique explanation was given by the preacher as to the origin of the race: “When Cain killed his brudder Abel, the Lord missing him, axed Cain, ‘Whar’s your brudder Abel?’ Cain answered, ‘I don’t know, massa, I didn’t seed him.’ Then the Lord hunted around the corn-field, and by and by He comed back and looked ober de fence, and again axed him, ‘Where’s your brudder Abel, you grand raseal nigger, you?’ Then Cain he got skeered and if it hadn’t been for that nigger turning so white we nebber would have been troubled with this sassy set of white trash.”
